Example 2:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82AKfGsbw_k    Please watch 1:00-3:15

In this class, we often talk about what we study when we study music. Historically, the study of music was based on the study of musical scores (sheet music). Alan Merriam suggested we look to other areas besides the score for a better understanding of music in/as culture. In his article “Ethnomusicology: Discussion and Definition of the Field” he points out particular areas that we should study when trying to figure out an unfamiliar style of music. Here is a musical example you have never heard before, nor have we discussed in class. It has no printed musical scores.  What clues (on stage and in the audience [and maybe even in the YouTube metadata]) can you observe that would help you figure out what is going on and where it is happening? What would Merriam have you look at? Discuss observable clues only – no need to guess where or what.

Define and describe another of Alan Merriam’s “Uses and Functions of Music” in this video:

Questions – please answer briefly:

1. What is Music?

If possible, relate your brief answer to class discussions; and concepts in readings by Alan Merriam (Anthropology of Music), J.H. Kwabena Nketia (The Music of Africa), and/or Titon and Slobin (“The Music-Culture as a World of Music.”)

2. One of our musical guests, Siwen Xi, demonstrated a traditional instrument in class.  Please give an account of her presentation with some details. For instance, what is the instrument made of? How is it tuned? How is it played? What is its history?

3. Does the definition of music change depending on culture or region? Give two examples of how music is defined differently or used by people differently in another culture.

4. Briefly define the following categories of musical instruments and give an example:

  • Idiophone [remember to give an example]:
  • Membranophone:
  • Aerophone:
  • Chordophone:

Name an instrument that doesn’t fit into one of these categories, and why doesn’t it fit? :
