Research Paper: Research Literature Critique/Review (50 points):

Topic submission (5pts) due 9.14

Outline (5pts) due 9.30

Paper (40pts) due 11.11

Provide a review of research on at least 3 research articles. The topical theme of the article is clinical applications of neuro-biological measures. The proposal should provide a clear specification of variables, data analysis, methodological procedures, and results. Further guidelines will be discussed in class.

2 Experiment Report due 10.4; 11.15

Participate in a psychology experiment by signing up on the Sona system. It can be any type of experiment (behavioral, eye tracking, EEG, MRI, etc.). It cannot be a survey where you only have to give some ratings or fill out a questionnaire. Tell the experimenter at the start that you would like to interview them after the experiment, for an assignment in this class. Do the interview after the experiment is over.

The report should be 2 to 4 pages in length, double spaced, 12 point font. It should have the following information/sections.

Basic information: Name of the experimenter, name of the Principal Investigator (the senior person leading the study, typically a faculty member), time and date of your participation.

Question/Hypothesis: What is the question they are trying to answer with the experiment? Are there any hypotheses they are testing? Do they have any predictions? [e.g., they are testing this theory of attention vs. that theory. Or, they hypothesized that adding a distractor would increase reaction time in this condition but not in that condition, etc.]

Participants: How many participants do they plan to run in the experiment? What type of participants (e.g., healthy adults only, or healthy adults and those with ADHD).

Stimulus materials: What were the stimuli used? [e.g., natural scenes, shapes, words, flashes.] How were they presented? [e.g., in different colors, in different arrangements on the screen.]

Conditions: What were are main conditions in the experiment? [e.g., a 2×2 design might have the following 4 conditions: (1) detect an X without a distractor (2) detect an X with a distractor (3) detect a color without a distractor (4) detect a color with a distractor.]

Procedure/Task: What were the subjects required to do? [e.g., in one condition they were required to look at a fixation cross and press a button when this happens; in another condition they are asked to count the number of times a symbol flashes.]

Analysis: How to they plan to analyze the data? [e.g., the will do an ANOVA to find main effect of having a distractor. Then they will do planned comparisons to test effect of this vs. that, and look for an interaction.]

Expected results/conclusions: What to the experimenters expect to find? What will they be able to conclude if the results turn out this way or that way? [e.g., Such and such results would support theory A, while such and such would support theory B. Or, if there is an interaction in the RT between distractor and shape, it would show that attention works this way.]

The above information can be included in sections titled Introduction, Methods, Expected Results/Conclusions.

Paper Report

Select any one paper from those posted on Blackboard, and write a summary report on it.  All parts of the report should be written in your words, and not copy/pasted from the paper or any other source.

The report should be 2 to 4 pages in length, double spaced, 12 point font. It should have the following information/sections.

Question/Hypothesis: What is the question they are trying to answer with the experiment(s)? Are there any hypotheses they are testing? Do they have any predictions? [e.g., they are testing this theory of attention vs. that theory. Or, they hypothesized that adding a distractor would increase reaction time in this condition but not in that condition, etc.]

Participants: How many participants did they run in the experiment(s)? Indicate for each experiment if there are multiple.

Stimulus materials: What were the stimuli used? [e.g., natural scenes, shapes, words, flashes.] How were they presented? [e.g., in different colors, in different

arrangements on the screen.] If there were multiple experiments in the paper, briefly indicate if stimuli changed between experiments. [e.g., Experiment 1 had circles and squares, Experiment 2 had Xs and Ys.]

Conditions: What were are main conditions in the experiment? [e.g., a 2×2 design might have the following 4 conditions: (1) detect an X without a distractor (2) detect an X with a distractor (3) detect a color without a distractor (4) detect a color with a distractor.] If there were multiple experiments in the paper, briefly indicate how the conditions changed between experiments.

Procedure/Task: What were the subjects required to do? [e.g., in one condition they were required to look at a fixation cross and press a button when this happens; in another condition they are asked to count the number of times a symbol flashes.] Again, mention if different experiments had different tasks.

Analysis: How did they analyze the data? [e.g., they did an ANOVA to find main effect of having a distractor. Then they did planned comparisons to test effect of this vs. that, and looked for an interaction between distractor and shape.]

Results and conclusions: What did the experimenters find? What were they able to conclude? [e.g., Such and such results supported theory A, and not theory B. It showed that attention works this way or people do this but not that in this situation.]

The above information can be included in sections titled Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion/Conclusions.
