Written or Visual Art Composition (20%)

Create a non-fiction essay, poem(s), comic or visual art composition which responds to or intervenes in an environmental issue explored in Part 1 of the course.

In addition to your written or visual composition on a theme you should also provide a demonstrated understanding of the environmental issue with a three-page discussion of main arguments, controversies, misconceptions and this should also refer to at least 3 course readings and assigned films. Upload your submission on eclass before lecture on Feb 18th

LENGTH 3 double spaced pages excluding (bibliography) for discussion of main arguments. 3 page minimum for a written composition (or 1000 – 2500 words depending on whether you are submitting a written or visual composition or a combination). Include bibliography and cite references in the text.

Remember most creation involves recreation and rewriting so this assignment can serve as the basis for your contribution to your group anthology. This means you will be able to develop it or build on it in the second part of term 2. Chose an issue that excites you and to which you are committed!

Chose a theme: On being innocent; Response-ability on a Damaged Earth; Biopiracy; Cancers; WATER -Flood, Rivers, Dams, the Ocean; Ghetto; Oil Pipelines; Colonial Ghosts of Canada; Colonial Borders; Fires, Trees, Mining and Extraction; Food; Disability; Honoring the 8th fire, Land defenders, Plastics.

Chose a possible form: Comic or Zine telling a story about an struggle for environmental justice in which 7 things happen that affect the main character(s); Drawings- 3 Self-portraits in 3 social geographies that have shaped my life; 3 poems – declaration, monologue, lyric or narrative; Epistolary Essay – Write a letter to a someone you love warning them of an environmental injustice; Short video about a river accompanied by Poetic narrative, Critical creative non-fiction essay in response to the work of one of the artist’s we have covered.

Prompts – These can be used as first -lines or they can be in the body of your composition. They can also be used to prompt drawings or comics or monologues.
