Devise your own topic, with my consultation and approval

In Macbeth, Shakespeare explores [WHAT] through his use of [HOW].
Remember that I want to see an ARGUMENT, and I want your thesis to lay out what you will do in your body paragraphs.

E.g.:

In Macbeth William Shakespeare uses the term “time” in a number of different contexts such as the political, the personal, and the cosmic, to highlight the ambiguity between possibility and that which is already determined by other forces.

From reading this thesis, I know that the student will have paragraphs on the political, personal, and cosmic references to time. This is useful for the reader of your essay to understand what is happening, conceptually, and also holds you accountable for keeping the structure of your essay relevant to a central argument.

I would be happy to see essays that only deal with one section of a play as they work through an issue. This might help some of you narrow down ambitious topics.

There is no need to consult secondary sources, but if you do, please quote them according to Modern Language Association (MLA) standards. The website called OWL at Purdue has an excellent sample MLA Works Cited Page if you’re curious.

Formatting criteria: Times New Roman 12, standard margins, double-spaced (and no extra spacing between paragraphs), quotations referring to Act.Scene.Line in Shakespeare, with quotation marks and parentheses.
