CoursePear™ From @2009。

This class includes a final project that requires you to select a historical topic of interest to you that connects to course themes (culture, identity, and politics in the United States), and then engage deeply with both primary and secondary/academic sources around that topic.  You will have significant freedom in choosing among multiple options for what that project looks like. These options include working with 1-2 other students, or working individually, as well as different formats for the type of work you will do and what the final project will look like. If you choose a group project, you should be aware of the possibility of DU closing mid-quarter, and should be willing/able to continue working remotely with your group.

The goal of this final project is to participate in the type of research we’ll read and discuss through the quarter, in at least some small way. How that looks will be different depending on which option you choose, but I hope this will be an opportunity for you to deeply engage with a topic of personal meaning to you and to learn more about the historical context of that topic.

In addition to the final project option that you select below, each student or group will complete scaffolding assignments throughout the quarter and briefly present on their project during our last synchronous class session.  The final project is due at the end of the final exam period, although I advise everyone to work ahead (especially those working in groups).

Option 1: Collaborative Podcast. Coordinate with a group of 1-3 other students to produce a podcast of about 12-15 minutes.  The Digital Media Center on campus can help you, but I strongly recommend that at least one member of the group has some prior audio recording or editing experience. Your podcast can include interview(s) but should also reflect some of your groups’ own original research, including both primary and secondary sources. You will also submit a transcript and reference list in addition to your recording.

Option 2: Traditional Research Paper. Research and write a traditional research paper. The paper should explore a historical topic (smaller is better) through the lens of culture, identity, and politics.  You can choose to write an individual paper (7-9 pages) or with one coauthor (10-12 pages).  In either case, the paper must draw on both primary and secondary sources and must include a thesis statement (argument) that motivates and structures the rest of the paper.

Option 3: Multi-Media Timeline. Using tools from knight lab (https://timeline.knightlab.com/#make), research and curate a multi-media timeline on a topic related to course themes.  The timeline should include a minimum of 12 entries, and a mix of text, video, and images (including some primary sources).  Along with the timeline, you will submit a 3-page paper and reference list that contextualizes the topic.  This is an individual project.

Option 4: Create your own final project. Propose a different option in consultation with the professor. Proposals can be individual or for a group of 2 or 3.  Whatever you propose, it must involve a historical topic, connect to course themes, and engage with both primary and secondary sources in some way.  Although the project may involve different work than the options outlined above, use them as a guide as to the size, scope, and effort involved.
