In this unit students will be reading two short novels: Ayn Rand’s Anthem,
and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. In working with these texts, students will examine the historical and political contexts of the authors as well as the novels’ central themes. Assessments deal with the nature vs. nurture debate, the different literary devices employed by the authors, and the impact of personal history on perspective.

Use your outline and the feedback from your teacher to write the first draft of your essay.
You have the opportunity to to receive feedback on your draft before submitting your final essay for grading.
The length for this assignment is approximately 1000–1250 words.

There are two topics to choose from, ONLY CHOOSE ONE.

Topic 1: for the

Now that you have completed reading the novel, it is time to reflect on the novel as a whole. What is Frankenstein’s message for the modern age? What lessons can we take from this story and apply to our 21st century world? In your essay, you should focus on one of the following areas:

  •   scientific research or discovery;
  •   the role of language in society;
  •   as global citizens, our responsibilities towards others;
  •   the need to recognize and accept differences among people.
  • .  For your essay, you need to discuss one of the topics listed above and explain clearly how they relate to the novel.
  • .  You must make references to local, national, and global issues (the modern age).
  • .  Include specific quotations from the novel to support your ideas.

1. In your outline, it is not enough simply list the quotations; you also have to discuss in specific detail why the quotation supports your arguments.

  • .  Be sure to write a formal essay:
    1. Do not use “I,” unless it is in a quotation.
    2. Avoid using contractions in your writing.
  • .  You must assess the credibility of each source and submit this analysis along with your outline. Topic 2: in Anthem
    You will write an essay in which you argue either in favour of or against the philosophy that Rand presents in her novel.
  • .  To make your arguments, you need to begin with some research. Use examples from history (either ancient or modern) as well as from current events in the news. 1. If you are arguing in favor of Rand’s ideas, for example, you might want to think about how something like the “Occupy Movement” could be used to support your case. 2. If you are arguing against Rand, you might consider something like the rise of Nazism in Germany.
