Assign leadership style

Traits Perspective

What you’re being asked to do is to write a brief summary rather than a long research document. Sound good? I thought so. If you’ve done any research on academic journals, you’re familiar with a type of executive summary — only in academe it’s called an abstract. It briefly summarizes the document so that you, as a researcher, can quickly evaluate whether the information will be useful to your research or investigation. An “executive summary” is just the term used in business proposals with the snarky implication that executives will never read your report and have to be given piecemeal information instead because of their short attention spans. (Yes, that last statement is dripping with sarcasm from professional experience.)

For this project, your group’s executive summary should be no more than two (2) pages, single-spaced, with the following headings for sections. Your executive summary should address the following (minimum):

  • Summary — this is a brief overview of the leadership style (with APA in-text citations)
  • Best practices — that is, the best uses for the leadership style; its advantages; under what circumstances or situations; etc.
  • Shortcomings — what disadvantages are there to using this leadership style; when should it not be used; what circumstances or situations might it not work; etc.
  • Recommendations — how might the other groups in the class incorporate this leadership style to be more effective or competent in their communication; what elements of the leadership style would be best suited for maximizing group tasks and performance; etc.
  • Examples — provide examples from your group’s completing of tasks so far this quarter in which you may have used this leadership style with or without knowing you were doing so.
  • Conclusion– provide a quick, brief wrap up or summary of your executive summary.
  • References – include the textbook and the additional readings in APA format. (Hint: the readings list provides these for your leadership style in proper format.)

As you can see, keeping this to a maximum of two (2) pages is part of the “art” of crafting and creating an executive summary. There are multitudes of examples available online. These are common headings that are standard elements of most executive summaries — whether writing a business plan, marketing plan, case study, or more.
