Opinion Piece

An opinion is something you think is important and controversial, but you have a logical opinion on that you would like people to know. Your opinion piece must be logical and based on fact.

There is no room for misinformation or inappropriate communication. You present your opinion in a way that you believe in what you write and communicate about.

Opinion pieces are published in most newspapers – sometimes called op-eds. You can find opinion pieces in New York Times, Guardian Magazines, The Globe and Mail, etc. There are plenty of examples of opinion pieces you could find on the internet. The topic you choose is completely open, but you must address a controversial environmental issue.

The length is approximately one single-space page – may be as short as three-quarter of a page to as long as one and a half page with Times Roman 12-point font and an inch margin on each side. Be sure to put a title on top [one line].

Please note, I am not requiring you to write an opinion piece that you must publish in a newspaper. If you can, that would be great. But my expectation is to write an economic argument addressing an environmental issue that you are passionate about. The information you present must be factually correct and logically connected, and the written communication you make must be easily readable and understandable by ordinary citizens.

The topics could be arguing either for or against any statement, i.e.,

• Canadian Federal carbon tax is a disaster

• Intensive agriculture in Canada is a boon for the environment

• Canada unethically enjoys cleaner air than many other countries in the world

• An increase in gasoline tax can substantially reduce greenhouse emissions in Canada

• Global warming causes Canada’s polar bear to extinction and Canada must act

• Household waste disposal fees must be increased to improve environmental quality

• Canadians, in general, are in love of fresh air but do not want to pay enough for that

• Canadian Federal tax system is not in favor of environmental conservation

• Canada is blessed with abundant freshwater but has not been a good steward for it

• Canada will be disproportionately affected by global warming and must act

• COVID-19 reminds us of the importance of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions

• Why renewable energy is an important answer to global environmental preservation

Please note, the above list is for examples only and you do not have to pick your topic from the list. You can pick any controversial topic of your choice beyond this list if that addresses a controversial environmental issue.

It is also to be noted that it is immaterial what your position is or whether you are arguing for or against an environmental issue. You are completely free to express your opinion. I will not share your opinion with anyone else without your permission, nor your grade will depend on what your opinion is. What is important and as such your grade will depend on is the convincing argument you make on an environmental issue based on sound economic theory and available information.

If I can, I would like to recommend you read the Opinion columns written by Prof. Paul Krugman, a Nobel Laureate in Economics, and an author of an introductory economics textbook aside from numerous technical publications. Check the website: https://www.nytimes.com/column/paulkrugman. Note, his opinion pieces are often longer than a page, but you can appreciate the richness of the information included and the way he makes the argument. Nonetheless, these op-eds are written for general populace and can easily be understood by anyone. Include the following paragraph at the bottom of the Opinion Piece followed by your name.
