Your project should describe/address the following:
• At least two social/economic forces: What societal changes have had an influence on life in your neighborhood, and on architecture by extension? Which forces are continuations of things happening today (in 2021), and which ones are new? (Even if these are fictional—for example, we finally find out aliens are real—what happens to the built environment as a result must be believable. In these cases, try to find a parallel example from history that could point to what might happen, and play that out in architecture.)
• At least one technology: How do current or future technologies affect life on your block?
• Building forms: What do individual buildings look like?
• Building programs: Are these the same (houses, schools, etc.) or different? If they are
different, how?
• Density: Is your block more or less crowded than today?
Just like the autobiography of part 2, your project’s speculations should be grounded in reality. You will be making it all up—but each aspect of your answers to the questions above should connect back to something you’ve already observed or discovered about the area you’re focusing on. This means that you will incorporate at least five new non-Wikipedia sources (in addition to any sources that you found for the second part of the assignment).
You will be graded on your thoughtfulness in both imagining and representing your block in the future. The goal is to draw out the interplay between social and technological change, ideas of living, and the physical forms and arrangement of architecture—just the way we’ve been doing all semester long.
