According to Beauvoir, what is a woman? Your response to this prompt should include an explanation of what Beauvoir means by her claim that “One is not born a woman but becomes one” as well as her claim that “Woman is other.”
You are also welcome (and encouraged) to draw on other key claims and examples from Beauvoir’s work (both in The Second Sex and the 1975 interview), but your response must include an analysis of these two claims.
Once you have worked through the exegetical portion of this paper, I would like you to either extend, complicate, or challenge one of Beauvoir’s claims. Examples could include responding to one or more of the following questions:
a) How might Beauvoir’s analysis be applied to the situation of women today? Do any of her claims seem especially relevant and helpful for thinking about more recent phenomenon? Or are there places where her analysis needs to be updated?
b) Are there any connections that you see between Beauvoir’s work and other thinkers we have studied this semester? If so, how might her claims overlap or conflict with the figure you have in mind? (As a note, Marx would be especially relevant here given that Beauvoir herself talks about her relationship to communism in her interview, but you are welcome to discuss any of the philosophers we have read this semester).
c) Consider some of the claims Beauvoir makes about how we might work towards equality. Are her proposals reasonable? Utopian? Do they go far enough? How might we work towards equality today?
d) Are there any claims that Beauvoir makes which you think are incorrect? If so, how would you respond to her analysis?
*Note that your thesis statement should tell me how Beauvoir answers the question of woman and should state the insight you plan to argue for later in the paper.
