| In this assignment, you will do a research report on an interactive artwork |
| that was created between the years 1968 and 2010. In order to complete this assignment, you need to do independent research using SFU online library resources. You will have to justify why do you think the artwork you selected is interactive based on readings done in class thus far (Kwastek, Huthamo, Daniels,and Klusczinsky). Please note that you are not allowed to discuss any artwork presented in the Lecture. You have to look for artworks that interests you personally. The artwork should be interactive artwork. The work needs to have been shown in an art exhibition, an art gallery, art museum (ie. an art institution). You cannot do research on films, video games, web projects, videos, designed objects, etc. that do not circulate within contemporary art institutions and/or discourses. |
Your research report should include the following:

Please make sure spelling is correct. - Artist (s) brief biographic information
Where are the artist(s) from? When were they born? Do they have formal studies, in what disciplines? In what stage of their careers were they when they made the artwork? For instance, are the artist(s) established (already well known) or were they emergent artists (just starting their careers)? - Title of the Work:
- Materials used:
For instance: video, performance, painting, audio, robots, etc.. - Date and place showed/exhibited
Please describe where and when has the artwork been shown (ie. Cybernetic Serendipity, Telematic Connections or any other exhibit). Include the full title of the exhibition, the name of the museum or
gallery, the name of the curator, and the dates of the exhibition
and where is the gallery located. 6. Description of the work
Describe in detail how the artwork is presented, how it works and why do you
think is interactive. Base your opinion on the readings assigned in the course.
Uses at least 2 assigned texts.
For instance: “the ‘ title of artwork’ consists of three videos that are projected on to three of the walls of the gallery space. The walls are covered with a coat of wax which provides an organic texture to the video images projected. The viewers enter to exhibition space from a door located on the wall that doesn’t have any projections, etc…. According to Christiane Paul ( 2003, p.67), art that requires the viewer to have a purely mental or contemplative response is not interactive. In this section, you will summarize in your own words how was the
artwork received by the community , that is how art critics, art
historians and/or viewers in general responded to it. Place close
attention on how it is categorized (performance art, telematic art,
etc…) The objective is to help you explore the differences between
the artists’ assumptions and the audience interpretation of the
artwork. You need to include at least two sources as a reference
(newspaper, magazine aritcle, book, catalogue, artists website,
exhibition website etc…)
The responses that you find can be written by an art critic at the
time it was shown or it can be by an art historian found in a book or
specialized magazine. For example, if you find the artwork that you
selected in a book of performance art then note that your artwork is
categorized as performance art. Also, if the artwork selected is part
of a group exhibition you can include a response to the whole
exhibition. Make sure to explain that your artwork was part of that
show. - FormattingandCitation
• Formatting, in-text citation, list of references and bibliography should follow the APA style guide. (Use the checklist included in this module to help you review your work before submission).
• We will follow the grading categories from the W rubric explained in the lecture one and we will use the rubric to grade this assignment.
• Follow the 4Cs to craft your paragraphs. • Remember to include a bibliography of all the materials and sources that you consulted in your report.
Submission
A word document or a PDF file submitted to CANVAS. Make sure you write your name and student number in your file. 2-page report ( maximum words= 800 words) + Bibliography and Citations.
PROFESSIONAL TIPS: - Start by doing preliminary research online. Make sure that you can
find all the info required to write the report. If not chose another
artwork. You can also do research online by using other finding aids
such as google scholar. Please make notes of all your sources and
cite them accordingly. - Please remember to take detailed notes of all sources you
consult ( ie, the title of a newspaper article, author, date published, page numbers, etc..). You will need to include full citations of all sources in your report.
