Submit an argumentative, literary analysis of one of the texts we have read so far in class (Weeks 1-9: The Enlightenment in Europe and the Americas, Literatures of EarlyModern East Asian, Romantic Confessions (pts. 1&2), The Age of Revolution inEurope and the Americas, the Romantic Poets, Romanticism and the Black Jacobins, and At the Crossroads of Empire). Your essay should seek to develop a strong, uniqueargument about one or more of the text’s central themes by paying close attention to thetext’s use of rhetoric, language, imagery, literary techniques, and formal structures. That is, the essay must consist of an original thesis statement, which you must defend throughout the essay. You should work toward developing an original idea that moves beyond The Norton’s precis and what we have said in class. Our class discussions can—and should—influence your argument, but a strong literature essay should also say something new about the text. In other words, you want to use this assignment to showcase your own ability to think critically about the texts that we have been reading. I expect you to take risks and experiment! You have two options: 1) you may set forthan argument regarding the text, or 2) you may set forth a general proposition and deploythe literary analysis in order to prove your argument.
Extra credit will be given to anyone who engages with and/or references a philosophical text or a secondary assigned piece of fiction and/or poetry in your analysis of a poem, short story, or novel. Special consideration will be given to thosewho identify literary techniques in order to enhance the analysis/argument. Please see the list of literary terms posted on Blackboard.
