We will begin this project in class on Oct. 20 so that you can ask questions and compare your findings with others. There may be a second day to work on in class, depending on everyone’s progress.

  1. Research the demographics of the female residents (over 18) in one Irish townland using the 1911 Census (link in Moodle) as your main source.
  • Using a spreadsheet or whatever method works best for you, collect data on the female residents in these categories:
    • Age
    • Marital status
    • Occupation
    • Age at marriage
    • Spouse’s age
    • Children born
    • Children deceased
    • Religion
    • Literacy (read only, read and write, neither read nor write)
    • Relationship to head of household
    • Composition of household
    • Possible relationship to other families in townland
    • Class of dwelling
    • Anything else that pops up
  • Find whatever physical or geographical information you can about the townland from maps, Street View (many places in Ireland have not changed much since 1911), or other sources.
  • Introduce us to the women in your townland by writing a 5-7 page paper in which you describe the data you have gathered, and tell us what you have learned about them, their families, homes, or livelihoods. Then, link your data to issues and ideas raised in class discussions or readings.  This might things like marriage or childbirth rates, economics, literacy, family dynamics, poverty, social networks, or anything else that seems relevant.
  • Use proper academic format, including citations for direct quotations or references to someone else’s work.  List any outside sources you use in a “Works Consulted” list at the end. Include your spreadsheet, table, or data collection in a separate sheet.
  • Finish data collection by Nov. 1 for class workshop. Final essay due Nov. 3.

Grading

You will be graded on:

  1. Attention to detail (the more data the better) and accurate analysis of the numbers (totals, percentages, averages, etc.).
  • Establishment of a connection between your findings and the ideas and trends we have read and talked about in class. Best sources are our textbook by Gibney and Clear’s “Marriage,” but McLoughlin’s “Pauper Women,” Laird ‘s “Decentering,” and other articles might be useful as well.
  • Extra credit: Use of sources beyond the 1911 census (comparison with 1901 census, Irish historical newspapers, Folklore Schools’ Collection, Street View, etc.).
  • Proper academic style and format.

Irish Newspapers Archive:  From the Drew Library homepage, select Databases A-Z.  Then select “I” and scroll to Irish Newspaper Database.  This database is not always user-friendly, so be patient.  Using a date filter in the neighborhood of 1911 search your townland name first. It is unlikely that any of your women will be mentioned by name in the newspaper, but there may be things going on in the townland of interest to your analysis.
