A note about drafts: While drafts do not need to be complete, they should be developed enough to allow me and your peers to give you meaningful feedback. Your Rough Draft should be at least 11⁄2-2 pages, and your Revision Draft should be at least 21⁄2-3 pages.
Essay Prompt:
While all the readings for this unit discuss the idea of community, not all define “community” in the same way; there are differing expectations of how a community is constructed, how it is maintained, and what its purpose is. Many of these different expectations reflect the growth of online communities, where members can connect in a variety of virtual ways, and hybrid communities, where the virtual and non-virtual overlap.
For this essay, you will analyze one of the communities to which you belong. This can be a current or a past community, but should be one you know well enough to speak about in detail. For your community, you will need to provide some basic details (such as its purpose; its type— online, offline, hybrid; how members are connected—shared history, interest, work, etc.; and how members interact with each other—daily interactions, scheduled meetings, random encounters, etc.). For your analysis, you should 1) examine your personal involvement and engagement with your community: How and why did you become a part of this community? What do you gain from belonging to it? What are its limitations? How has it shaped you? Then, you should 2) consider the ethics/morality of your community: Is it insular or open? How does
it treat non-members? How does it converse with other communities? What values does it encourage in its members, and why?
Once you have analyzed your community, you will use that analysis to define your own idea of community. You may refer to the readings in this unit, but your focus should be on describing what makes your community its own separate, unique “community,” and what that tells us about communities in general.
Note: Your primary source material for this essay is the community you analyze; you do not need to use any other texts (though you can). If you choose to bring in other texts, they should be cited using MLA or another standard citation format.
