REQUIRED WRITING PORTFOLIO

If you quote or consult any source for any of your responses, be sure to use QUOTATION MARKS around the quoted language (to indicate that the words are not your own) AND insert a citation (MLA style, in parentheses) right after the sentence that contains the given quote OR specific observation by someone else.  Then, at the end of your portfolio, include a bibliography containing the required information for any sources that you cited or even simply consulted (author, title, book/website, publisher, publication date, etc.).  You should include your textbooks as well if you are citing, but be sure to give the specific reading from the textbooks that you are citing (and include the page number).

Please respond to ALL of the following prompts and follow the instructions:

  1. Trip to Concord:  Write 3-4 detailed paragraphs (a page or so) about one or more of the in Concord (Robbins House, North Bridge, the Old Manse).  Explain what you found to be most interesting about that place (or those places) and, most importantly, how it connects (or they connect) with one or more of your current CGS courses (HU, SS, RH).
  • Connecting American Transcendentalism with Political and Social Reform: Read one of the following pieces from Part IV (Secular Reform) of the book The American Transcendentalists:
  1. Excerpt from Fuller’s “The Great Lawsuit” (pages, 301-320) (on feminism and women’s rights.
  2. Emerson’s “The Significance of British West Indian Emancipation” (347-353) (on the abolition of slavery).
  3. Excerpt from Emerson’s “The Fugitive Slave Law” (pages 362-369) (on the abolition of slavery).
  4. Except from Thoreau’s “A Plea for Captain John Brown” (pages 371-378).

Then, in 1-2 pages, explain the main arguments that the author makes (for women’s rights or against slavery) and, most especially, explain why the American Transcendental thinkers (especially Emerson, Thoreau, and Fuller) were also active and dedicated political-social reformers.  How do their social-political writings and speeches connect with their overall philosophy and the basic ideas of Transcendentalism?  What, in your view, is the connection between Transcendentalism and the desire for social-political change in 19th century America?

  •  Boston/New England Cinema.  On Monday, June 13, we will hear from film critic and film historian Gerald Peary who will talk to us about New England (and especially Boston) cinema.  He will also use a famous classic Boston-based film to show us how to analyze a film scene.  In two pages, select one movie from the following list of contemporary films set in the Boston area (see list below).  Then choose two of the most memorable scenes from your chosen movie and, after briefly describing what each scene is about (how that scene plays an important role in the movie), analyze each scene according to at least three of the basic elements of cinematic analysis: acting, dialogue (script), camera work (camera angle, camera movement), music, and editing.

Please be aware that some of the following movies may include scenes with graphic violence, obscenity, and/or sexual content.  Please read a bit about the films before you choose one.  If you may be disturbed by certain elements of a given film, please choose a different film.  You can watch the trailers and read about the films online to see if they contain any warnings about violence, obscenity, and/or sexual content. For example, you can quickly find the Motion Picture Rating (MPAA) that warns about these contents by looking up the movies on the Internet Movie Database (imdb.com).

Choose one of the following contemporary movies set in the Boston area:  The Town, Mystic River, Good Will Hunting, The Departed, Manchester by the Sea, Gone Baby Gone.
