Purpose: To enhance your self-knowledge as a consumer in various areas of consumption behavior. For this assignment, you will monitor one area of your consumption behavior closely, analyze the things you are doing now that could be wasteful and/or least environmentally friendly, and identify strategies as to how you could change the behavior.

Deadline: 11:59 pm on Friday, November 5 (new deadline) via Canvas

Format: either WORD or PDF format

Steps:

  1. Recognize ONE behavior area (e.g., food consumption; food waste; energy consumption; recycling; transportation; water consumption; apparel consumption; or clothing laundry, etc.) which you do that has been considered wasteful or has not been environmentally friendly, but you could try to change.
  2. Skim through the articles listed below. Informed by the articles, you will come up with three specific strategies on your own that you think you can implement to improve the identified behavior area for this assignment. And, cite at least one of the four articles in your paper.

  • For a seven-day period, make an effort to change your behavior identified in Step 1 and implement the three specific strategies. Keep detailed records in your diary (use the third page in this document as a template).
  • At the end of the seven-day period, examine your diary entries and write an analysis to be included in the assignment.

What to Include in Your Assignment:

In your paper, please include the following specific headings and organize information accordingly. Format of the assignment: typewritten (the consumer diary part could be hand-written), single-spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font on pages with 1 inch margins.

  1. Identified Behavior/Primary Goal(s) for Improvement: (1) Describe one behavior and explain why this specific behavior area is identified for this assignment and (2) discuss your primary goal(s) which you would like to achieve at the end of this self-consumption analysis task.
    1. Strategies Implemented for Behavioral Change: Describe and explain three specific actionable strategies that would help you achieve the goal(s) of the behavioral change. Record daily how you have or have not implemented the strategies using the Consumer Diary at the end of this document.
    1. Motivational Conflict: List, define, and discuss one type of motivational conflict (refer to Chapter 5) you experienced during the process.
    1. Consumer Feelings during the Process: Identify and explain both positive (e.g., happy, surprised, proud, excited) and negative (e.g., sad, annoyed, embarrassed) affective responses you experienced during this process. Whether and how did the feelings influence your subsequent behaviors?
    1. Challenges during the Process: Identify and explain two challenges you faced during the process. If no challenge experienced, please state in the paper.
    1. Reflection of Experience: a) Discuss the extent to which the process was easy or difficult and why; b) Discuss whether you intend to continue implementing the three strategies after the seven days’ effort and why/why not.
