  1. Topic: Create a paper based on some aspect of two or all three of the plays we have read in class–an aspect which has meaning in light of the works as a whole. Topics may vary according to your own interests: starting points might include such subjects as parent-child relationships, husbands and wives, religious issues as expressed in the plays, marriage, gender construction, concepts of honor, class structure. You would then need to consider the ways that subject could be developed specifically. You might want to compare one aspect in two different plays. Narrow your topic enough that you can develop it thoroughly. You need to take some sort of position in relation to your topic: i.e., if you chose the topic of fathers and daughters, you would need to narrow the topic to two or three father/daughter pairs and then discuss them in light of a particular point you want to make about them. For example, you might want to show the way a patriarchal social order makes it necessary for daughters to be manipulative. Test your topic for significance; don’t leave the reader asking, “So what?”

    Statements about religion, spirituality, and/or belief in the plays The role of women

    NB: these are topics, not thesis statements. You must narrow your topic and take a position on a particular argument in relation to the topic.
  3. General advice: Your essay should have a clear, interesting controlling idea (i.e., a thesis) that states a position in regard to your topic. You should develop that idea through a sequence of supporting points that explain and extend that idea. Points should be backed up with evidence (details of plot/character and/or quotation.) Use quotation sparingly. If you quote a lengthy passage, highlight the relevance of the quotation to your point in your commentary. Avoid ending a paragraph with a quotation; close with your own commentary.
    Be concise and don’t ramble, but say enough to make your point clear. Don’t let plot summary overshadow your analysis. You can assume your reader knows the plot, so refer to plot details sparingly to clue the reader to your location in the text or to support a particular point.
    Try to give some indication of the range of valid interpretations made possible by the text, but spend most of your time developing and defending your own view.
  4. Sources. If the points you are making about the plays allude to the historical context of the time, you will need to support those with historical and/or critical sources. You may use some sources from the internet, as long as they are legitimate scholarly sources—i.e., peer-reviewed. You could also include scholarly, peer-reviewed sources which you find in the library, not on-line. If you do use outside sources, do not let their ideas dominate your paper. Develop your own ideas, and use the text to back them up. Your sources should supplement some of your points, and/or you may use sources for historical information.
