Question:
Discuss Kyoto’s transformation from imperial capital to early modern city and compare it with that of Osaka. What seem to be the most important factors behind the transformation? In what ways did Kyoto change? What features of the city remained the same? How does Kyoto’s early modern makeover compare with that of Osaka? Are there circumstances that lend Kyoto’s urban history a distinctive air?
Rules:
Your essay should be 2000 words (7-8 pages, double spaced, in a normal font, with 1” margins).
Citation form:
The following examples—taken, with slight modification, from Prof. Susan Klein’s excellent and concise guide to citation form, covers the relatively “relaxed” form appropriate for this essay, especially when citing texts assigned in the syllabus or suggested in the paper topics.
You need to cite your sources, not only for direct quotations, but also for ideas. In-text citations are sufficient; if you cite only works that are in the syllabus or among suggested readings for a particular topic, there’s no need to attach a bibliography. If we have read only one work by an author, the name or title is good enough:
As Berry notes, “xxxxx” (120). [direct quotation]
According to Wakita, XYZ is true (120). [paraphrase of idea]
In Wordly Mental Calculations, a poor man dreams of gold coins and in the morning a heap of them seem to have miraculously appeared (155) [paraphrase]
When citing or quoting an author who has more than one article or translation used in the course, make sure you distinguish which article you mean by citing the title of the work:
John Hall argues that as a “trend toward the privatization of political influence” took hold the capital became “a cluster of palaces, mansions, and temple residences inhabited by … court families” (Kyoto as Historical Background, 19)
As daimyo grew in power in the sixteenth century, they moved their “headquarters from the narrow confines of mountain defenses to larger … fortresses placed at the strategic and economic centers of their holdings” (Hall, “Castle Town,” 44).
How titles should be indicated
Titles of books and journals are either italicized or underlined, e.g., Capitalscapes or Capitalscapes (choose one and be consistent!) Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies or Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies
Titles of articles and book chapters in edited books are in quotation marks: “The Castle Town and Japan’s Modern Urbanization”
“Urbanisation and the Nature of the Tokugawa Hegemony”
Note you do not need to say “In McKelway’s book, Capitalscapes, he argues” or “In John Hall’s article, “The Castle Town,” he claims … ” First, the use of italics or quotation marks already identifies the work as a book or article, and, second, it’s wordy and awkward. In these cases it’s far better—more succinct and direct—to say “In Capitalscapes, McKelway argues that …”
