Outline:
- Read the guidelines for the Lens Analysis Essay and the submission and formatting guidelines detailed in the syllabus.
- Read the Citing Sources handout, then in one paragraph, summarize the essay that you have selected as your exhibit (Díaz, Douglass, Sedaris).
- In two paragraphs, clearly describe a personal literacy experience that intersects in some significant way with your exhibit essay. Specify the type of literacy you were trying to obtain e.g. literacy in conversational French, literacy in babysitting, literacy in using Instagram. End by explaining to your reader why you want to examine this experience alongside the exhibit essay. Write two potential central questions that you could explore.
- Read the Citing Sources handout, then in one paragraph, summarize Brandt.
- Read the Lens Analysis handout, then identify and quote four ideas from Brandt that could function as lenses to help you analyze specific quotations or small excerpts from your exhibit essay. (Do not include Brandt’s definition of “literacy sponsors.”) For each quotation, briefly explain how you think it can help you to question and interpret the literary experience described in the exhibit essay.
- In one paragraph, use Brandt’s definition of “literacy sponsors” as a lens to make the argument that specific individuals, items, or institutions in the exhibit text are “literacy sponsors.”
- Use the other quotations as lenses to analyze and explore other relevant aspects of the literacy experience described in the exhibit text.
- Discuss what new questions or insights you have about your own related personal literacy experience after analyzing. The goal is to come to a new more complex perspective and understanding about your own literacy experience. (2 – 3 paragraphs)
- Conclude with one paragraph in which you address the following questions: What is the significance of being literate (or illiterate) in the type of literacy you’ve identified in your personal literacy experience? What are challenges to becoming literate in that specific literacy? Why do they exist? What can be done to overcome them?
Goals:
-Continue to work on the goals from the first assignment e.g. using the introduction to orient the reader and identify a central question; formulating a strong thesis claim; establishing a motive; maintaining a coherent structure; using evidence fairly and persuasively.
-Integrate your sources with deliberation and purpose. The sources can be used to articulate the motive, establish the intellectual conversation, provide context or key terms, analyze evidence to support your claim, or argue with other interpretations. Document sources using the MLA in-text citation method. Include a works cited page.
-Have cohesion and coherence in your prose on the sentence level and on the paragraph level. Your diction should be precise. Avoid clichés of language and clichés of thought
-Have an interesting and informative title.
-Adhere to all relevant formatting guidelines described in the course syllabus.
