This week’s assignment induces ArcGIS. GIS platforms are a valuable tool for not just making maps, but also for organizing, manipulating, and analyzing spatial data (shapes, lines and points) – all important tasks in any physical planning process. For the assignment you will create two maps as a way to familiarize yourself with some of the basic ArcGIS functions as well as continuing to refine your Adobe Illustrator skills.

Map 1

In this task, you will create an 8.5″ x 11″ map of Champaign County using GIS data that conveys regional growth trends. From Canvas, download the following spatial data for Champaign County: county boundary, municipal boundaries, and roads. Using the ArcGIS “Attribute Query” feature and Adobe Illustrator, create a map of the county that shows the county boundary, municipal areas, Interstate and state highways. Other roads should be faded out so that they don’t dominate the map. With this basic map in place, annotate it with graphics showing the key growth areas in the county: Champaign (to the north, west, and south), Urbana (to the east), and Mahomet (to the east and west). Remember, think about the kind of map/graphic you are creating. The areas of growth depicted on the map are meant to provide a general sense of how the region is changing, not a precise delineation of growth boundaries, so be sure to think about what this means for graphic elements you include. With the map, include map basics such as a title block, a north arrow, author name, source, and a graphic scale. You can view an example of a similar type map here

By using ArcGIS and Illustrator together, you can symbolize and highlight variations in the attributes of spatial data on your map. For this map, use ArcGIS to analyze the relationship between variations in population among the County’s urban areas and proximity to different types of transportation infrastructure. Your task is to create a map that visualizes and draws attention to that relationship as one possible explanation for the differing growth trajectories and current population sizes among cities. A starting point is to display the variation in the population of each of the municipalities and think about how it relates to distance from rail, highways, critical roads etc. ArcGIS tools such as “attribute query” and “data symbology” will be helpful in your analysis and creating a map visualizing your conclusion.

Both maps should be submitted as part of a memo describing growth areas in the County and your analysis of the relationship between population and distance from interstates, state highways, railroads or other roads you deem crucial. Any peculiar findings should also be taken note of. You might also comment on the interrelationship between the different municipalities and how that may affect the population figures.

ArcGIS instructions for this assignment:

Map 1:

Connect folder containing GIS data to ArcMAP
Add data and arrange layers as needed
Right click on the layers to open the attribute table and explore the attributes associated with the points, lines and shapes
Click on “table options” -> “select by attributes” and select a field and key attributes you want to highlight (e.g. interstates)
After making a selection, right click on a layer to make a new layer from the selected features -> selection -> create layer from selected feature
Rename this layer as you would like
Play around with colors etc. to make it a clear map
Click “view” -> layout view
Insert north arrow; legend; scale etc.

Click “Joins and Relates” -> Join
Select “Join attributes from a table”
Select “NAME” in field 1
Select the excel sheet “Municipality Population” provided from Compass in field 2
Click on “validate join”
Right click “MunicipalBoundaries” layer -> properties
Go to “symbology” -> quantities -> select “POP 2017” in value field
