- The origins of sericulture in China were gendered. Drawing on class notes and/or assigned readings, provide one example of how gender was implicated in early Chinese sericulture. Identify and explain your example in two full sentences. (10 points)
- Through this unit, we discussed many textiles that were produced in the context of developing religious traditions. Identify and discuss two different examples of textiles that were adapted to emerging spiritual or religious practices. These examples should be specific textiles with identifying information (e.g. Embroidered Textile Fragment, Han Dynasty, 2nd Century BCE) and lecture date and slide number (e.g. September 6, Slide 4). After identifying your example, discuss how it relates to one of the faith practices seen in this unit in two to three full sentences per example. Your answer must include two different faith practices. (20 points)
- In the chapter “Production and Distribution,” material culture scholar Beverly Lemire describes how “the silk industry has been called the ‘spoilt child of mercantilism’: petted and protected, the object of obsessive attention from ministers and kings, esteemed, some might argue to a greater degree than it deserved” (p. 4 of PDF). Throughout this unit we have encountered many examples of governments developing, nurturing, and protecting their respective silk industries. This question has two parts:
- Summarize why governments were so motivated to “spoil” the silk industry (one to two full sentences)
- Drawing on class notes and/or assigned readings, provide two examples of government policy or action that illustrate Lemire’s claim (two to three full sentences per example) (20 points)
