The Brief:

Part 1: Buying & Merchandising Cycle

Using the buying cycle followed in this module for own label businesses:

  • Explore each stage of the cycle under clear sub-headings, explaining the roles and responsibilities of an own label Buyer.
  • Do the same for an own label Merchandiser at each stage, indicating clearly their tasks at each stage of the cycle.
  • Again, at each stage of the cycle, indicate which other key internal, and/or external personnel would be involved, and the part they play.

How to structure Part 1.

You will need to follow the logical order of the buying cycle, (a reminder of which is below), to demonstrate the Buying & Merchandising roles and processes at each stage:

Part 2: Customer Profiles

Choose a pair of retailers from the list below, both of which follow the own label route to market.:

Present a customer profile for each brand as a visual profile, with written keywords.

Be clear, in the profiles, how the customer for each brand differs.

Own-label Retailers: Choose 1 of these pairings:

EITHER

Choice 1: Hugo Boss & Reiss

Garment categories: Men’s shirts (NB for HB, include Hugo label only) or Women’s dresses

OR

Choice 2: Gant & Massimo Dutti

Garment categories: Men’s knits or Women’s shirts & blouses

Part 3: Range Review: Critical Appraisal

  1. Next, choose 1 category, from the list above, which is stocked by both the brands from Part 2.
  2. Primary research: For this assignment, you need to plan and set aside a morning or afternoon when you can visit one of each of the 2 retailers’ stores in central London, to observe and compare the chosen category product selection for each brand.
  3. Log the date and time of your visit. (Make sure you visit both stores on the same day). Note the location of the store selected. (Is it a flagship store?)
  4. Provide photographic evidence of the visit: this could be one or two of the category items, (NB please ask a sales assistant before doing this, explaining that you’re doing a university project); it could also include a shop window, if the category is featured there.
  5. Carefully observe and analyse the category product offer, answering the 4 questions below in task 3.
  • Critically analyse the relevance of the bought product range of this category to the target customer of:

a) retailer 1

b) retailer 2

evaluating its appropriateness.

For each retailer, evaluate the following:

  1. Is the category offer correctly interpreting the relevant spring/summer 2022 trends for the customer, (as profiled in Part 2)? If so, specifically what and how have they been adopted? Also note if key trends have been missed, giving details.
  • Is the balance of core versus fashion product appropriate? If so, why? If not, why not?
  • Is the category range balanced? Are there any missing elements that should be there? Why?
  • Is the price for the value offered appropriate for the target customer? Why/why not?

Part 4: Forward Range Planning 

Use the template provided in week 8  

What recommendations would you put forward for this category in coming seasons for each retailer, based on the above findings – and WHY?

Create a table to show these recommendations, which indicates:

  • The recommendation and the reason for it
  • In which part of the buying & merchandising cycle would action on the recommendation need to be taken?
  • Who in the team is responsible? (buyer/merchandiser/designer/quality control etc.)
  • What tasks do they need to undertake to action the recommendations?
