Research Paper Guidelines
The English 1302 research project is a bibliographical essay. The subject is the novel used in the course, in this case Carson McCullers’ The Ballad of the Sad Café. The thesis statement advances a statement about the range of scholarly opinion contained in the articles reviewed in the essay.
The assignment is to choose a topic from among the following: genre (myth, fable, ballad); character (Miss Amelia, Marvin Macy, Cousin Lymon or other character in the novel); the Coda or “The Twelve Mortal Men” segment; or the narrative function (number and/or kinds of narrators, identification of the narrator, etc.). These topics all have a wide range of published, peer-reviewed, critical opinion. Browse the offerings in the databases, choose a topic, and select five articles to discuss. Organize discussion of the articles chosen for your essay from the one you find least convincing to the one you find most convincing or insightful. This determination may be based on the depth of the analysis, the originality of the approach, other approaches discussed, or similar elements. A sample essay from a different course is provided to assist in how to approach the introduction and other elements of the essay. Thee should be at least two direct but short quotes from each of the essays reviewed.
The research paper will be structured in accordance with the guidelines set forth in the current edition of the MLA Handbook as described in the LSC-Kingwood Library Guide for this assignment.
Specifics:
Length: A minimum of 1200 words (including works cited), typed, double-spaced, 12-point standard font
- Sources: 5 articles, all full-length (no abstracts or reviews)
- The articles must be drawn from scholarly journals and critical texts derived ONLY from LSC-Kingwood Library databases.
- All critical articles must be in PDF format so that page numbers may be cited.
- Sources such as subject-specific encyclopedias and dictionaries may not be used. The best electronic sources, which include but are not limited to JSTOR and Project Muse are listed in the Lib Guide to which a link is provided in the course.
- DO NOT USE any article which is derived from a resource described as “for Students,” is a blog, or which is clearly intended for K-12 students.
Quoted Materials: All quoted materials must be introduced using the author’s name and must be followed by a comment: Simon Alberquist argues convincingly that “[assisted suicide] is a contradiction in terms” which “complicates rather than alleviates the problems inherent to this controversial issue” (83). Like any other self-directed action, outside intervention in suicide changes the nature of the action. [This is an entirely fictional entry followed by comment.]
Due date: The document (text and Works Cited) must be submitted as a single document to the drop box in D2L by 11:30 pm on Sunday, November 7.
Grading: The project is valued at 200 points. Please review the Evaluation Rubric provided in a separate document for a breakdown of scoring for the assignment.
Important reminder: As stated in the syllabus, a successfully-completed research project is required for a passing grade to be earned in the course. Regardless of other points or grades earned, failure to complete and submit a research project results in failure of the course.
