International Service Learning Assignment Objectives
The objectives of this ISL project are as follows:
Objective #1: To map current capacity-building programs available for CSOs in Liberia. This will be accomplished using a two-pronged desk review of capacity-building programs available for CSOs in Liberia: a) those implemented using international donor funding, and b) any “other” capacity-building programs available (for example, implemented by the Liberian government, Liberian institutions of higher education, umbrella CSO organizations, etc.).
Objective #2: To conduct a needs assessment of the actual capacity-building needs of local CSOs in Liberia. In what areas do CSOs say that they need to build capacity? This could be in the areas of: strategic planning, grant writing, fundraising, income generating activities, marketing and public relations, financial management, staff recruitment, hiring, and retention, staff performance reviews, board development, volunteer management, information and community technology, partnerships and collaboration, program/project planning and evaluation, advocacy, and/or legal requirements. Or, perhaps they have other needs they wish to articulate.
Objective #3: To compare existing capacity-building programs identified in Objective 1 with the actual needs of Liberian CSOs identified in Objective 2, in order to identify gaps/disconnects.
Objective #4: To develop recommendations for key stakeholders on how to best meet the capacity-building needs of Liberian CSOs. Using the information gathered from Objectives 1, 2, and 3, put together recommendations for CSO administrators; administrators and faculty from institutions of higher education in Liberia; and local and international grant-makers on what steps need to be taken to align future capacity-building and NME programs with the actual needs of Liberian civil society organizations.
Project Requirements/Deliverables
In order to meet the four objectives listed above, masters and doctoral students enrolled in the course will engage in the following activities, and produce the following deliverables:
- Desk review and analyses of a) current trends in donor funding to Liberian civil society and b) availability of capacity-building programs for Liberian civil society.
Your desk review should include:
Detailed review and analyses of the Liberia Project Dashboard (LBD) (https://liberiaprojects.org/). This new dashboard lists over 900 donor-funded development projects currently in progress in Liberia. Some of these projects are related to capacity-building for civil society. You should review the LPD and identify the projects related to civil society, and review/analyze them related to: donor, project amount, type of civil society capacity-building program, and anything else you think is important. You should also do a desk review to try to identify any other projects related to building the capacity of Liberian civil society: perhaps there are government-funded programs, and/or projects implemented by institutions of higher education or by CSOs. Create some sort of report that you can turn in that summarizes your findings.
- Needs assessment that identifies the actual capacity-building needs of Liberian civil society, using semi-interviews with select Liberian CSOs to collect data.
I will work with you to brainstorm a list of Liberian CSOs (and also university stakeholders) to approach for interviews. You should create a semi-structured interview guide for your interview(s), using the course resources provided on CBQR in Johnson (2017). You should conduct at least 3 interviews.
Your needs assessment should include the following sections (see Brown and Hale 2014, pp. 256-258):
- Executive Summary
- Introduction
- Methods
- Findings: Needs
- Findings: Assets
- Conclusions/Recommendations
- In-class group PPT presentation that summarizes your findings and recommendations.
Since a pedagogically sound service learning project encompasses multiple components, including group activities, written documentation, and most importantly, a high level of student initiative, I am leaving it to you (the group) to work together to deliver the above materials to me by November 29, 2021. On this day, I will also expect you to produce an in-class presentation of these materials to me and any other relevant stakeholders I may choose to have in attendance. You should use Powerpoint or another similar visual aid during your in-class presentation. Your presentation should be 12-15 minutes total.
- Weekly group project update
I need to be sure I am receiving regular input from the group on your progress. This will help me to ensure work is progressing in a timely manner, as well as allow me to offer guidance and support as needed. To this end, please prepare a Word document that contains weekly entries that record and track your group project progress. Each week, send me an updated version of this Word document with a new weekly entry that outlines your thoughts and activities for that week. Please send your weekly updates to me via email, by 5pm on Friday, so I can review them prior to our weekly class meeting.
- Individual student journal
Service learning also includes a personal reflective component on the part of students. In this course, that will require you to keep an individual journal throughout this project, a copy of which will be turned in to me, also on November 29, 2021. Please record at least five weekly entries as the project progresses, and include the following information:
- Track your group progress. Discuss how the project develops (problems/issues, strengths/successes).
- Discuss the project in the context of course material.
- Talk about how this project may have affected your own personal views (and this could be positively or negatively) and values in such areas such as: international development, the nonprofit sector and its contributions to society, and any other areas you find applicable.
- Make recommendations for future improvements, both for the service learning project and the course.
